KUCHING: Police have arrested four members of the notorious "Lo Han" gang following a shootout in Sibu.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Deputy Comm Datuk Talib Jamal said police opened fire when the men, who were in a car, tried to ram a police vehicle during a chase a10am yesterday.

He said police aimed their shots at the tyres of the car, but two of the gang members were injured.

"They are in stable condition in the state police contingent headquarters here yesterday.

With the arrests, police might have crippled two gangs high on the wanted list in Sibu.

The leader and several members of the "Hua Kee" gang are under remand in connection with a kidnapping case.

Recounting the incident yesterday, DCP Talib said a patrol car trailed the car the gang members were in following a tip-off that they had been involved in a burglary in Taman Salim.

"Police found several wearpons, including a samurai sword and a parang in the car, which was reported stolen in Kota Sentosa.

"Also recovered were a 32-inch plasma TV, three laptops and jewellery," he added.

DCP Talib said the gang members were believed to have been involved in armed robberies, extortion and burglaries in Sibu and Meradong.

He said police were still hunting for the "Lo Han" gang leader who was involved in a murder case in Julau in central Sarawak.

DCP Talib added that the gang's membership was diminishing but could not say how many of them were still left.
